Remind Me Why We Watch College Hoops Again

NBA, WNBA, NCAA topperzLet ‘em paint their face, gawk at Erin Andrews, memorize the chants, co-opt their team’s glory as their own. That’s what college is there for. Live it up. This isn’t a brushback pitch against the college athletics experience. But this is a clarification that none of that is basketball. There are the naysayers who berate the pro game, ignore the women’s game and deign to call the college game the best basketball has to offer.

But those people are confused. They must be, because it’s not even close.

I know, right? You can hardly control your excitement. Well, Sidelines can’t control its excitement. So for the five weeks leading up to the season tip-off, we’re thumbing through our old fantasy notebooks, cringing at our past selections and revisiting our top 10 fantasy picks from each of the seasons that introduced us to a new decade, starting with the season that introduced us to the 70s. Bill Russell had just retired that summer after the Celtics won their 10th Championship in 11 years. Meanwhile, Wes Unseld entered his first year in the league, legitimized the Bullets and promptly won the MVP.

It’s Tuesday and in five weeks the 2009-10 NBA season will officially begin. Many of us are already gathering our notes together for our basketball fantasy drafts. I know, right? You can hardly control your excitement. Well, Sidelines can’t control its excitement. So for the next six weeks, we’re thumbing through our old fantasy rosters, cringing at our past selections and revisiting our top 10 fantasy picks from each of the seasons that introduced us to a new decade, starting with the season that introduced us to the 60s. The Celtics were World Champs and a kid named Wilt Chamberlain had just entered the league.

How the Draft Should Have Gone

NBA - Clippers Draft topperzThe NBA Draft has come and gone, but the 14 lottery teams got it all wrong. They shouldn’t be going after the top prospects from here and abroad. The Clippers, Grizzlies and other bad NBA teams should have picked up the player that they really need. It might have been a robot, a mom or Kunte Kinte. But had they followed our advice, you can bet that one of these teams would be playing in the Finals one year from now.
