[A letter from a SportScape viewer]
Dear NBC,
Quit screwing with the fans of “Friday Night Lights”. You are killing me.
I’m a sports adict and I love the show. I tell everyone we know about it. Several of my adult friendships are built solely around the show. But after hearing FNL won’t be back until Summer 2010, I wouldn’t be more stunned if Landry clocked me on the head with a lead pipe. Yeah, it’s that bad.
I’m not dumb, I know it comes down to ratings, and “Friday Night Lights” has never been good about that. But it pushes “Mad Men” for the best show on television. And taking that away for an entire year is criminal.
And if you think ratings are bad now, are they going to get much better after that long of a layoff? It’s hard to see how the show will pick up viewers by virtue of not being on the air. And while the wait might create extra anticipation among hardcore viewers, I’d argue that it simply sets them off.
Sure, the show will air this fall on DirectTV. But you know what, I don’t have DirectTV. And pardon me if we’d rather watch the Panthers beat up on Arnett Mead in HD than trying to troll for episodes on the Internet. I know that the current deal with DirectTV helped save the show, but that doesn’t keep me from getting mad.
Finally, seeing how the first episode plots of “Friday Night Lights” tend to pick up after a several month layoff, am I supposed to believe this one-year hiatus only translates to a quiet summer off in Dillon? Eric Taylor could have led East Dillon High to a state title for all I know. Buddy Garrity might be dead in a ditch somewhere! J.D. McCoy could develop a Marinovich-esque coke addiction and finish rehab by the time the next season debuts!
And how am I supposed to function without getting an Eric Taylor pep talk every week? And if it wasn’t for our heart-to-heart talks with Tami, then I probably would have never gotten into college. You’re taking all of that away from me.
And to top it all off, NBC, you are taking Minka Kelly away for a year.
As they say in Dillon, that ain’t right.
[...] Night Lights” don’t even get me started [...]
