With five days before her return to the grass courts of Wimbledon as the tournament’s 24th
seed, Russian Maria Sharapova awkwardly stood behind the window of an upscale London
department store as part of the grand prize to a Sony Ericsson design competition.
Ironically, Sharapova was not modeling the contest winner’s dress, just sort of standing next to it. That’s the newest trend in Russian modeling; they don’t pose in outfits anymore, they pose as the friend of the person who owns the outfit being modeled. It’s all very chic. UPDATE: With Bluetooth connectivity, the dress Sharapova’s not modeling flashes when the wearer gets a phone call. And here I thought the person wearing the dress was best suited for flashing, not the dress itself.
I won’t get all up-in-arms about how this makes Sharapova look. She’s still recovering from a shoulder injury that kept her out of action for nine months and this photo-op seems to work against her normally intense training persona. Sharapova Supernova clearly doesn’t care about appearances, otherwise she wouldn’t have worn that Katharine Hepburn onesy she’s wearing in these pictures.
The best part about this entire event is that someone had to plan for the 22-year-old to stand at this window display and be photographed next to a mannequin wearing a blinking dress. Someone sat down and thought that putting her on display next to the clothes – not in them – would make sense. Look at her. How long do you suppose she stood there before she decided that she needed to give her agent a good kidney punch? I’m thinking it took fewer than 45 seconds.
That’s roughly the same amount of time it took the first British gent strolling by on his lunch break to yell “Take it off, love!” But she wouldn’t be able to follow through with that request because jumpers don’t slip off easily.
UPDATE: Yup. I’m totally blaming the dress for this.
