MMA Fighter Shimmies Down Weight Classes In Hopes of Shimmying Out Jail Window

MMA - Shimmy topprMiddleweight Lee Murray (8-2-1), best known for beating up light heavyweight Tito Ortiz in a 2002 London street brawl (unsanctioned of course, this ain’t Rocky V“), has been holed up in a Moroccan prison for over a year on drug charges. For most, that would be the end of a wild story. For Murray, it’s the middle. Last week, the mixed martial artist of five years, was found attempting a jailbreak in what is likely just Murray’s next chapter, not final chapter.

From Fighters Only Magazine:

The London-born Moroccan-heritage fighter is in jail in Morocco on charges of cocaine possession. He arrived in Morocco after being identified as a leading suspect in a £53 million bank raid in the UK.

According to MMA Torch (citing The Wrestling Observer) “small saws were found in a plate of biscuits in Murray’s cell by another prisoner who broke into it. Prison officials believe Murray was planning to cut through the iron bars of his cell window with the saws.

“To make the escape through the small window easier, Murray had lost a significant amount of weight recently though training hard and starving himself. Murray was in a different cell at the time as punishment for being caught with a laptop and five kilos of drugs.

Murray’s  fellow prisoners apparently resent the way he is able to use his wealth and connections to obtain luxury items and privileges.

The £53 million ($92 million) robbery Murray is accused of masterminding took place at a Securitas depot (a cash-in-transit and security guard company -Ed.) in England on 22nd February 2006.

A team of at least six men succeeded in stealing the largest cash amount in British history after abducting and threatening the family of the depot manager and tying up 14 staff members.

First thing’s first, how big are Moroccan biscuits that a plate of them could hide a saw? It seems from the numerous reports that Murray was as beloved on the inside as he was on the outside, at least enough that fellow prisoners broke into his cell in hopes of finding proof that he had Internet access, a laptop, five kilos of coke and a poster of Rita Hayworth. Most of the reports claim Murray was both training and starving himself in order to lose weight, which is a statement that greatly confuses the definition of training. Murray is unlikely to ever fight professionally again, although street brawls aren’t out of the question.
